Garena Free Fire Surpasses Fortnite as Top Battle Royale

Although the hype around battle royales isn’t what it once was, viewership for the genre is still very healthy. Millions of viewers are tuning into Twitch and YouTube Gaming to watch Fortnite, COD: Warzone, and Apex Legends. But what about mobile battle royales? They may not be as popular in North America, but games like Garena Free Fire and PUBG Mobile are generating massive viewership. Recently, Garena Free Fire has surpassed Fortnite as the most watched battle royale of 2021. Does this set the stage for the genre to be mobile dominated in 2022?

  • As of the end of October, Garena Free Fire amassed 1.08B hours watched compared to Fortnite’s 1.02B.
  • Mobile games have been on the rise across North American streaming sites in more than one genre. While Garena Free Fire is dominating battle royales, games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Arena of Valor have been growing their MOBA viewership.
  • With mobile games having a bigger impact on live streaming, brands could have a unique opportunity to engage with a new demographic of live streaming audience. Publishers and tournament organizers could also capitalize on the growing mobile esports scene in North America via new leagues and events.
